Embracing Spiritual Challenges That Strengthen Our Faith

Faith is often seen as a steady, unwavering force in our lives. But let's be honest, sometimes theres situations that we go through where our faith wavers. Our faith may fluctuate due to so many reasons, it may be because of challenging circumstances such as an illness, the loss of a loved one, even a tragic accident, and even the simple act of relying on our own feelings and emotions. It is then, that we need a little reminding of what it is to have FAITH. It is through small or big spiritual challenges that our faith truly grows and deepens. These moments, though subtle and sometimes overlooked, shape our beliefs and character in profound ways. One of my favorite Bible verses on this topic is found in James and I love The Message version in James 1: 2-4 saying, "2-4 Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. Wow! that verse is powerful. How we respond to hard moments in life, shows the world what kind of faith we have! Are we those who throw in the towel and give up? Or are we those who get up regardless of what we are going through, with the help of God, and move foward? The Lord instructs us to be courageous. We know that in this world we will face many challenges but The Word of God says, "take heart! He has overcome the World!" (John16:33). If you have Jesus in your heart and you have confessed Him as your Lord and Savior, and therefore He is in you, then you too have overcome!!!! Facing these challenges head-on can transform our spiritual journey, making it more resilient and meaningful. Lastly, the sentence in James 1:4 says that by us preserving through tirals, we mature and gain everything we need lacking nothing top overcome. Our faith should be like a flame of a candle, burning in the dark. Even though it may lessen, let The Holy Spirit keep that light burning.
Romans 5: 3-5
3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. (NIV)

Recognizing Spiritual Challenges
Spiritual challenges don't always manifest as dramatic events; they often present themselves as quiet struggles. I am very familiar with this! Personally, I've experienced some quiet struggles, one of which is doubt. You might have faced or are currently dealing with similar quiet struggles, such as:
Moments of doubt when prayers seem unanswered
Feeling disconnected during worship or meditation
Facing ethical decisions that test personal values
Experiencing loneliness in faith communities
Balancing faith with everyday responsibilities
These challenges may seem minor compared to larger crises, but they chip away at our spiritual foundation if ignored. Recognizing them is the first step toward growth.
How Small Challenges Shape Faith
Each small challenge acts like a gentle test, inviting reflection and perseverance. Here’s how they contribute to strengthening faith:
Building patience: Waiting for clarity or answers teaches patience and trust in timing beyond our control.
Encouraging self-examination: Questions and doubts encourage us to delve deeper into our beliefs instead of accepting them at face value.
Fostering humility: Acknowledging our limitations and need for God's guidance opens the door to spiritual growth. (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Enhancing empathy: Experiencing struggle helps us relate to others’ challenges with compassion. (2 Corinthians 1:4).
Strengthening commitment: Choosing faith daily, strengthening our relationship with God, reading and meditating in His word, especially when it feels difficult, reinforces dedication.
Practical Ways to Embrace These Challenges
Facing small spiritual challenges requires intentional effort. Here are practical steps which have helped me and continue to help me, to engage with them constructively:
1. Create Quiet Time for Reflection
In today's fast-paced world, finding moments of stillness can be a challenge, yet it is essential for personal growth and mental clarity. Creating quiet time for reflection involves intentionally setting aside periods during your day or week where distractions are minimized, allowing you to engage in deep thought and introspection. This practice can take many forms, from meditative sessions to journaling or simply sitting in silence.
2. Seek Supportive Community
Engage with others who share your faith. But, not just anyone. The Bible tells us to go to "wise counsel". Where can we find wise counsel? Yes at church, but most importantly with those whom you can see their fruits! When you have the right people to go to, have honest conversations about struggles which can provide encouragement and new perspectives.
3. Practice Mindful Prayer
Use prayer or meditation (no not Hinduism or Buddhism meditation! That's pure satanic.) I mean sit and reflect in God's word. Ask the Holy Spirit not just for solutions but to listen and observe your inner state, your thoughts. As Christians we should examine our hearts daily. This practice can reveal hidden fears or hopes. (Psalm 139:23-24).
4. Read and Study Thoughtfully
Read your Bible daily or a book of God's promises that address doubt and challenge.
5. Take Small Acts of Faith
Commit to small, consistent actions that express your beliefs, such as acts of kindness, gratitude, or service. These reinforce faith through practice.
Examples of Small Challenges in Everyday Life
A moment of frustration during a difficult conversation: Instead of reacting impulsively, pausing to pray or reflect can transform the encounter into a lesson in patience and understanding.
Feeling disconnected during worship: Recognizing this feeling and ask God to redirect your focus.
Facing a moral dilemma at work: Choosing integrity over convenience strengthens character and aligns actions with faith values.
Experiencing loneliness in faith practice: Reaching out to others or volunteering can build new connections and renew a sense of belonging.
The Long-Term Impact of Embracing Small Challenges
Over time, consistently facing and working through small spiritual challenges leads to:
A more resilient faith that withstands larger trials
Greater self-awareness and authenticity in beliefs
Deeper relationships within faith communities
A richer, more active spiritual life
These benefits show that small challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for transformation.
Encouragement to Embrace Your Spiritual Journey
Every spiritual journey includes moments of uncertainty and struggle. Instead of avoiding these moments, embracing them with openness can lead to unexpected growth. Remember that faith is not about perfection but about persistence and willingness to learn.
By welcoming small spiritual challenges, you build a foundation that supports you through life’s complexities. This approach invites a faith that is alive, evolving, and deeply rooted.

Powerful message and a beautiful reminder that all things work together for good to them that love God.
